Terms
These are the terms on which NPhours works with preceptors and programs. Last updated 2026-09-09. Applying, joining the roster or requesting preceptors means you have read them.
What NPhours is
NPhours is an independent preceptor network operated from Raleigh, North Carolina. It introduces clinicians willing to precept to nursing programs that need preceptors, coordinates the paperwork and the rotation, and pays preceptors for completed hours. It is not a school, does not award credit, does not employ preceptors and does not provide patient care. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any university or certifying body.
Preceptors
You confirm that the license, certification and practice history you give us are accurate and current, and you will tell us within five business days if any of them changes. You are an independent contractor, not an employee; you decide which rotations to accept and how to teach within the program's requirements. You will not allow a student to see patients without your supervision, and you will sign the midpoint and final evaluations honestly and on time.
Pay
Your rate is the one shown on your preferences page when you accept a card. A block pays that rate for every hour the program's log shows the student completed with you, in two deposits: half on the midpoint evaluation and half on the final. A rotation that ends early pays for hours logged. NPhours issues a 1099-NEC each January where the year's total is $600 or more. You are responsible for your own taxes and insurance.
Programs
A program that requests preceptors confirms that the person making the request may bind the institution, that the rules given to NPhours reflect its current handbook, and that it will review logs and release evaluation forms on the dates agreed. Placement fees are quoted per student per term and invoiced once a term. No fee is charged for a student who is not placed.
What NPhours will not do
Place a student with a preceptor whose credential the program does not accept. Report hours a log does not show. Guarantee a student to a preceptor or a preceptor to a program by a given date. Sign an affiliation agreement on behalf of a practice or an institution.
Leaving
A preceptor may leave the roster at any time by telling their coordinator; rotations in progress should be completed or handed over with the program's agreement, and hours logged are paid. A program may end its arrangement at the end of any term. NPhours may remove a preceptor whose license or certification lapses, who allows unsupervised care, or who withdraws from rotations without cause.
Liability
NPhours coordinates; it does not supervise clinical care and is not responsible for clinical decisions made by preceptors or students. Its liability to a preceptor or a program is limited to the fees paid or payable for the rotation in question. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Disputes and law
Talk to your coordinator first; most disputes are about a log or a date and are resolved in a week. Otherwise these terms are governed by the law of North Carolina, and disputes are heard in Wake County.
